Wooden and alternative transport pallets

Seven distinct specifications, each suited to a different job. Tell us the load, the handling and the route, and we will tell you which of these actually fits — including when the answer is a cheaper one.

New wooden pallets

New timber pallets are specified when the load, the customer or the destination requires a known, consistent starting point rather than a graded second-hand base.

  • Export consignments where the buyer specifies new packaging
  • Air freight build-up needing dimensional consistency across a batch
  • Sealed container loads where re-work in transit is impossible

Used wooden pallets

Used pallets are the working currency of UK domestic distribution. The important question is never simply 'used' — it is which grade, how consistent, and what the pallet is being asked to do.

  • Domestic distribution and internal site movements
  • Pallet network trunking where a serviceable graded base is sufficient
  • One-way domestic deliveries where pallets are not returned

UK standard 1200x1000

The 1200 x 1000mm footprint is the default across most UK grocery, retail and general distribution flows, and it is the size most commonly asked for on the South Coast.

  • UK grocery, retail and general distribution
  • Pallet network consignments on standard-size patterns
  • Domestic legs of an export journey before re-palletising

Euro-size 1200x800

1200 x 800mm is a footprint. EPAL is a licensed pallet specification with its own marking and exchange rules. Asking for one and receiving the other causes real problems at delivery.

  • European road freight where 1200x800 suits the trailer or customer
  • Customers whose racking and handling is built around the Euro footprint
  • Export packing where a smaller footprint improves cube utilisation

Plastic pallets

Plastic pallets are chosen for washability, consistency and repeat-cycle durability — and, for cross-border movements, because they sit outside the wooden packaging treatment rules entirely.

  • Food, beverage and pharmaceutical handling with wash-down requirements
  • Closed-loop operations where pallets return to the same sites
  • Automated handling where dimensional consistency is critical

Presswood pallets

Presswood pallets are moulded from wood fibre under heat and pressure. They nest, they are light, and they are widely used for one-way export where weight and storage volume both cost money.

  • One-way export where empty return is not planned
  • Air freight consignments where chargeable weight matters
  • Sites with very limited empty pallet storage space

Bespoke pallets and cases

When cargo does not fit a standard footprint, the base is designed around the cargo rather than the other way round.

  • Machinery, plant and heavy engineering movements
  • Aerospace and marine components with awkward geometry
  • High-value or fragile cargo needing a case or crate base
